I’d been walking back from a meeting in town when it suddenly began raining. I’m the type of person who packs an umbrella even at the slightest possibility of rain – in fact, at school my friends found it amusing how I always seemed to have an umbrella even in the middle of summer.

Lately though, I’d begun relying on a new weather app that provided very reliable hour-by-hour rain predictions to figure out what to wear in the morning – a sort of just-in-time clothing process – and today it told me the probability of rain was very low, hence no umbrella. And so here I was, sheltering underneath an awning waiting for the pedestrian lights to turn green, speaking to a guy who’d just been standing there.

I hadn’t noticed him at first; I was listening to a podcast of This American Life, the one about Father’s Day, and it took a while for me to realise he was actually trying to speak to me. The man was smartly dressed, wearing a dark suit jacket over an open-necked white shirt. He didn’t look like a weirdo, but you never know. I took one earbud out and turned towards him.

“You have a lucky face,” he said.

I laughed. “Thanks,” I said, thinking that he was just in a cheerful mood.

“You have a very lucky face,” he continued. “I can tell from your eyes and your mouth.”

“Hmm,” I said.

“But you look worried, you are frowning here,” he said, gesturing above my nose. “You should know that you will have good luck in the next three months, you will work hard but you will get what you are looking for.”

Ah, I thought, a fortune-teller. I glanced up at the lights; they were still red, and the rain was still coming down.

“Do you want to know why I think this? Let me tell you.” He slipped a red wallet made from leather out of his jacket and pulled out a few small bits of paper and a pen. He scribbed a few words on a scrap of paper, then crumpled it up into a little ball and gave it to me. “Don’t open it yet,” he said.

I took the paper and stuck it in my pocket.

“Okay, now pick a number from 1 to 9.”

Before I went to university, I thought I was interested in genetics and molecular biology. After precisely one lecture, I realised exactly how wrong I was and became determined to switch to something more stimulating, and I eventually found myself taking experimental psychology and neuroscience lectures. Many of them were highly reductionist or focusing on development or pathology, but some were at the cognitive level, and from them and from various textbooks I knew all about how humans reason and how poor we are at understanding logic and probability and causation.

They didn’t teach us specifically about magic, but it was clear that our limited capacity for attention and our ease of being misdirected was really the key to successful magicians. I once saw David Blaine perform a bit of magic at a TED conference. I was standing about one metre away from him when he did a fairly standard card trick on a guy he was close enough to touch, and then at the end gave the guy his watch back. We were all duly impressed; we had all been watching his hands intently, wanting to be the one person who was smart enough to see the trick, to figure out the ending. But he was too good.

“3,” I said, shrugging. He noted it down on a new piece of paper.

“Your favourite colour?”

The lights had turned green. This was the perfect opportunity to escape, but I wanted to see where this was going.

“Blue.” Why not?

“Your age?”

“Uh… 28.”

“How many brothers and sisters?”

“One.”

“Brother or sister?”

“Brother.” He wrote down ‘B – 1’ at the bottom of his list.

“Okay.” He looked up. “And what do you want most? Good health, good life, good fortune, good love, good family?”

I laughed. What an absurd question. “All of them,” I said.

For the first time, he laughed as well. “You have to pick one.”

“Okay then… good family.” He wrote down ‘G – F’.

He asked me for his bit of paper he’d given me at the start. I pulled it out of my pocket and handed it over, and he waved it in front of his face at precise points, and gave it back to me. “Don’t open it,” he said again. Then he began talking about how the numbers all added up and how if you combined this and that, I would figure out my fortune.

I was starting to finally get worried. I figured that he’d be asking for money shortly, and things had gone on for long enough that it was already going to be embarrassing when I left. With the lights back to green again, I backed away and said that I had to go now.

“No no no no no, we haven’t finished yet!”

“Sorry,” I said lamely.

“But you haven’t opened the paper!” he protested.

“Sorry,” I repeated behind me.

Befitting my status as a former scientist and being an avid reader of all the science blogs and such, I’m intensely suspicious of superstition. I have no problem with black cats. I deliberately walk underneath ladders. I’m sure I’ve broken at least two mirrors. But walking away from this guy, I couldn’t help but think I’d somehow cursed myself by not letting him finish his shtick; it was surely a rude thing to do, no matter how (eventually) annoying he had become.

Of course, I opened the paper. Written on it was:

3
Blue
0 – 28
B -1
G -F

For about three seconds, I froze.

Firstly, I thought: Wow, could it be true? Did this guy actually figure this out? Have I been completely wrong about all of this my entire life?

Secondly: Obviously not. But what are the chances of him guessing? Still pretty high – certainly not high enough to get a decent hit rate.

Thirdly: Wait a second… he must have done a classic switcheroo while I wasn’t looking! This must be the same bit of paper he’d been writing my answers on, and when he was waving it around, he’d swapped them over.

Aha. I felt proud of myself at this piece of Sherlockian deduction, then slightly sad. It was a tremendously engrossing piece of street magic; certainly not that technically impressive, but no doubt more than good enough to fool the average passerby. I wondered how much money he made by doing this. I wondered what he would have told me next.

And I wondered whether this was his life, giving other people a glimpse ahead into their lives. Giving them a certainty, proven with written evidence and without any caveats or probabilities or qualifications, that things were going to get better. I looked down at the piece of paper again, thought about whether to throw it away or not, and kept on walking.

  2. Similar thing happened to me on Wigmore street though I feel it was more impressive. The indian man, said his name was Baba, wrote down some things on a piece of paper, and gave it to me to hold. He then told me to guess a colour, and number from 1 to 100. I guessed red 37. I opened up the paper, which had been in my hand the whole time to see he had guessed correctly. I gave him a couple of quid. Whether it was the most basic of magic trick or not, the moment of stunned admiration was worth it for a couple of quid.

I am French, in my 40s, a young (20s) Indian smartly dressed with a white shirt and a warm face with a large smile approached me whilst I was waiting for a job interview (!) and told me I had an open heart and I should protect myself more because I am too generous and 2 specific “friends ” are in fact a bit jealous around me.
I said “go on, I like your style”.
So he began quickly scribbling some notes, formed a tiny scrumbled ball with the piece of paper and gave it for me to hold in my left palm for 5 minutes.
He also said in a commanding manner “you are a middle man” which left me puzzled.
During those 5 minutes He asked me for my age, age of my wife, how many children I had, name of my wife, my best wish in Singapore, my lucky number, which flower I prefer. He noted the answers on a large block of paper.
Then he asked me to open the tiny paper that was in my palm.
I was stunned. It contained all the information about me (age numbers letters etc) and all the answers were correct.
He asked me for SING 100 because I said I was only middle -rich, which I gave him as he insisted for his work as a YOGI called AMAN, travelling the world for 8 years on donations. I had to go to an ATM. He refused me taking a picture of him but I have a picture of his masster and also his cell phone. He gave me a “holy” stone and he left.
I feel very puzzled. I know he used some “mind reading ” psychological tricks to guess my status and feelings, and also maybe a bit of hypnosis, that may explain me unconsciously opening my palm at one stage and then forgetting he replaced the small paper with his notes!
Any explanation welcome. I will try calling him .

  7. Singapore

    Date: 23 Feb 2013
I’m a Singaporean Chinese in my mid 20s, while I was at Bras Basah area, this Indian man called me “Miss” and while I stopped he told me that I have a lucky face.

3 good things will happen to me, career, money and relationship. I thanked him and he proceeded to tear a piece of paper and put it to my palm asking me about my favorite flower – Rose and number- 7. When i opened my palm the paper was scribbled with rose and 7.

While speaking i was looking at his eyes trying to detect any deceit.. but I found none. ( Thinking about it now.. either he was sincere or he was pretending well)

Afterwards, he says don’t forget that a holy man once told you this and he asked me to put my palm in his black passport holder (in it are some red packets and an image of a holy man) he asked for my name and gave me his blessings.

He gave me a piece of advice, do not trust people too easily and tell them too many things in other words, keep my secrets as people may get jealous. This may hinder my success. I find his words wise and reflected on it a short while..

Thereafter he took out a piece of paper, asking for a donation. There were 3 tiers , rich person, middle person and poor person and he asked me which am I. My guards were immediately raised… I refused to give him the amount he demanded.

He thereafter showed me a photo of children and said the money will go to them.. I relented and asked if he would accept any amount. He reluctantly nodded his head, looking displeased.. I offered some small change and in the end we settled for $10 SGD.

I thanked him and walked away.

I was left puzzled , in any way, he gave me a good piece of advice and I was glad as $10 is a small amount so its OK 🙂

Be kind, be careful of scams and don’t get greedy

Same situation as before: guy in his 20s, approaching me while I was waiting at a red traffic light.
Same stuff: gave me a piece of paper, and then he asked for “my favourite number”, “my favourite flower” and my name. No need to say that everything was on the paper too.

And then, gave me one more, and then asked me more info (my wife’s name, her age…) So I just tried and when he asked me for more details (my favourite colour and similar stuff) I said just random stuff. And he guessed everything anyway.

He also asked money for poor people and I gave him S$ 20.

No explanations up to now, but he told me that I would have received some good news during the week. So let’s wait and see 😉
    No limits for providence.

  9. Location – Constance, Germany ( Near Swissborder ) on 05.03.2013

a Young Yogiman ( mid 20 ) appeard in front of me, and told me the lucky words. I was out with my dog, so i had enough time to listen to his words. Now i see it was a real failure. He told me a lot of things ( The whole number and flower thing ), and sat then together and had a nice conversation, where he tried to HYPNO me.. time passed and his targed was reached. I felt very dizzy but couldn’t do anything about it. Well he told me afterwards that he need money, and i have to go and get some .. what i have did, but i understood i shouldn’t.. still my body was working against me. I went home, he waited outside, and I went to my flat to get the money for him ( Damn, i was so hypno, i felt really happy to give it him, i was running to get the money.. incredible! ) .. well i gave it him, and he thanked me and went off.. as I went back home, i reallized that something just happend.. and couldn’t understand why, and why i did so, my head was really under pressure like after smoking marijuana… after 15-30 min i came back, and felt really raped. It was an ugly feeling, the whole day long after it… This happened yesterday, and i slept a lot now and i’m still dizzy … it is horrible feeling … well… i don’t know how it is after a hypnosis, but as much as i read i haven’t seen the same symptoms as i have now. thing this guy used some kind of a drug ( Scopolamine ) .. its a very powerfull drug, and it’s enough to touch a paper that had contact witht you, by bare hands (skin contact by your hand, sweat injection ) so you lose your will!!! ……… so i feeel really uncomfortable and i think it was this drug … it is used in colombia and in the world for such things like scam etc.

  10. Place: One Raffles Quay, Singapore
    Date: 8 March 2013, evening

The same thing happened to me yesterday, and the Yogi man was smartly dressed in white shirt and blue jeans.

He started telling me that I have a lucky face and 3 lucky things will happen to me in April.. Well, out of curiosity (plus he was rattling away), so I stopped to listen, but I was wary the whole time unsure of what exactly he wants. He performed the same trick on me by first scribbling on a piece of paper, crumpling it up and asking me to hold it in my hands. Proceeded to ask me how old I am, my favorite flower, favorite number, a country I have been to in the last 3 years that I like very much and the name of my significant other (which I only gave the initials). These whole while, he scribbled my answers onto the other piece of paper in his little red leather notebook.

So after all the questions, he told me to hand the crumpled paper on my hand back to him and he said some stuff and blew onto the paper and handed it back to me. Told me to open it up and if what was written inside the crumpled paper coincides with what was on his paper inside his notebook, then I am indeed a very lucky person.

Well, some of you believed that he swapped the paper while we all weren’t looking but I know he didnt! Because while I was staring at the crumpled piece in my hand, he was holding his own piece of paper. I might thought that he made a carbon copy somehow, so I checked and matched for the differences in his scribblings. Indeed, it was 2 different copies. Same content on it, but different writings.

I laughed and asked if it was magic, he said no and say it can only be done via yogi meditation. And then proceeded to show me some old photos of the Indian organization that he belonged to. And some pictures of poor kids. Immediately, I knew where this was heading. He wanted money.

Well, he asked for a donation to the organization, so I said “any amount right?”. He said, yes, some people gave $50 while some gave $100. I reached into my pouch and handed him $2. (The other note I have is a $50) He literally had a shocked, disappointed and crestfallen look on his face. Haha. I said “$2 is okay right?”, and then thanked him before making a quick escape.

I was more worried about being curse than succumbing to a monetary scam. Or that he was trying to steal my valuables when talking to me. Luckily, upon googling, I found this page and it seems like its just a money scammer and I didn’t lose much other than the $2. But his words were pretty comforting. Said I will have good career progression, 3 good news coming up soon and a good family life.

Can’t help wondering how he pull off that trick though!

  11. Place: Link ay between Clifford Centre and Hitachi Tower
    Date: 12 March 2013 around 6.05 p.m.

I met the same yogi man who told me I have a lucky face. He was young looking, in his early thirties, smartly dressed in a shirt and jeans.

I was quite tired after work so did not pay much attention to the exact thing he told me.

I recalled he said I like to worry a bit too much, when I sleeping, my body is resting, but brain is thinking and it is affecting my spirits.

It stuck on me as to how he figured that out, because lately I am indeed feeling troubled all the time and could not sleep.

There after he took out a piece of paper, scribbled something and ask me to hold it tightly in my hands.

I was skeptical, just hold it between my fingers.

He said I may not understand what he wrote but I would later.

Then he asked if I know yoga, then ask me what is my favourite number, flower.

I did not answer him, merely asked, “May I know where is this heading to, I am in a hurry”.

Immediately he had this dejected look on his face, and ask me to return him the piece of paper and we parted in different direction.

Thank god I did not stay any longer.

What a shame. Should have take a photo of his face and put it on social media to warn others.

  12. I experienced Yogi Singh at 1 Raffles Quay on Feb 25th, 2013. I was impressed with his routine. He did not take the piece of paper back after he handed it to me . It must have involved a switch but I was looking for it and am dying to know how it was done. It was worth the money as long as his charitable claim is true.

  13. I felt the same way after I met my “Lucky Face” gentle in China town, here in Las Vegas NV. I thought he was just another homeless man begging for money, so when he told me I had a lucky face, before he could ask for money or do any magic, I thanked him and gave him $3.

Before I could drive off he asked me for a piece of paper and a pen. I gave it to him and he wrote some things on it. He ripped 4 pieces off of the paper and balled them up. I said “Oh, magic. I love magic”. He gave me the pieces of paper and told me that I because I showed him kindness God showed him my future. He said that I would start a church one day, and that I would live to be 89. I laughed and said goodbye. Before I could drive off he told me that what he wrote on the paper was from God and that he’s sorry if my wife’s name was miss-spelled, but that’s the way God showed it to him.

I drove off, and when I got to a red light I openned the pieces of paper. They said 33 (I’m 33 years old), 3 children (I have 3 children), Blue (which is my favorite color), and Mickael ( which is my wifes name, spelled correctly).

I turned back around and drove until I found him walking. I gave him a $20 and thanked him for his wonderful magic trick. He told me his name was Mr. Yoga, and that it wasn’t a trick. I asked him for his phone number and he smiled and gave it to me.

    213-258-9586

I havn’t had the guts to call it yet, but I figure one of you brave souls will. I have no idea how he knew those things, but now I’m sure there’s a God.

  14. Hong Kong, a pedestrian bridge leading to the fast ferry piers from Hong Kong Island.

The same thing was attempted at me several times over a week. I my case those people operated on week-ends – in the same place, approximately in the same time.

As I recently read about the same kind of scam, but run in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, my replies to these people were rather short. The last time I simply told the guy to … off. Yes, I know it is not polite, but would you care?

One more thing worth mentioning: as far as I understood, it is some kind of hypnotic thing they are doing. We sometimes experience same scams in Russia (though ours do not begin with a “lucky face”). The pattern is always the same: some people approach you and tell you some rubbish, after which you find that you lack some sums of money (sometimes – really good sums). So it could be prudent to simply walk away once you hear the “catchwords”. It’s a much better option than trying to fight back the hypnosys or to discover how smart one is.

  15. Location: london
I had a similar situation today. The flower, number of children etc. Also said I have a good heart and that people where jealous. I went to cash point and gave him 20 pounds. He actually wanted 50. He did the poor, medium, rich thing. He then asked if I believe in God and prayer. He told me three lucky things would happen. He then said someone who is jealous has put a spell on me that’s why I have had bad luck, but he will pray for me for 21 days. He wanted 100/200/500 for this saying if I didn’t the spell is dangerous and I could have an accident or lose a limb. I said I didn’t have the money now and if he gave me his number I would call if need be. He said he’d start the prayers right away. I asked him not to as I could not afford to pay. He also had taken my name and gave me a lucky stone.

  16. This is got to be the same mother fucker that done this to me yesterday in kilburn high street London. Wanting 292 pounds. I gave this fool 30 pounds. He was blowing on strings and was telling me I had a curse on me. I am a muslim and he said he was doing prayers but I know they weren’t arabic… lying piece of shit. He also gave me a ring

  17. For the benefit of global travellers.

    2012:Thailand, Kai San road
I was straight from the airport off to meet mates hungover and not very interested. I guess they prey on suckers with a kind nature. I could smell the com but thought it was worth a few dollars for the theatre experience plus I have an interest too.
Long story short I gave money he said I was middle man but I make lots and dress poor especially when traveling. He said I’d have good luck after we did a little prayer- next day at full moon party I lost $600 and got really sick for 2 days hehe. I also think if I didn’t give money there would be threats.
Ps never moved to Scotland or met my future bride to be hehe 😦

  18. I just had this happen to me in the City, London. “Lucky face” etc. He asked a few of the questions highlighted by other people before.

I kept hold of the piece of paper at all times. Still was slightly drawn in by all the correct answers he managed to get right. I’d would’ve happily given him a fiver (which is what he asked for), even if it was just for managing to guess everything correctly! (Only had 1p on me though)

Apparently I’ll find love on the 25th of July (2013) so I suppose watch this space! But I won’t be holding my breath. Still impressive though! Even if it is just a trick…

  19. 10 June 2013
    Location-Bangkok

Happy face Indian scam on streets of Bangkok. Got $4000 bhat out of me. Exactly as described above. He did get scared tho when I started demanding he tell me how he did it. When he kept refusing, I got up to leave and he wanted me to pay for his orange juice. Told him he already had my money and he could buy his own damn juice! Be careful as the one in Bangkok takes you to a cafe and orders (and tries to get you to order something as well) and then wants you to pay. If I see him tomorrow I might punch him in the throat and ask if he predicted that coming >:/

  20. I had a similar situation today in Toronto, Canada. The flower, number of children etc. Also said I have a good heart and that people where jealous. I went to cash point and told him I didn’t have cash. He actually wanted 50,75, 100. He thought I should go to the ATM, I did not. He did the poor, medium, rich thing. He told me three lucky things would happen, the first would be July 25 2013, so I am awaiting my fortune. He also had taken my name and gave me a lucky stone, which he took back after I couldn’t give him the money.

I was almost going to believe this guy if money didn’t come into play.

  21. Hi!Here I’m a new member at this club.The lucky face club.
Last May at Soho Square, London.
Same holy man with blue turbant. The numbers, the colours, the photo of his master in India…the children who need the money.
    I gave him 50 pounds.
But this storie has a different end.
Suddenly two policeman came and took him apart and made him to give me back all the money, and recommend me to enjoy as much as possible the rest of my holidays at UK

  22. Place: Millenia Shopping Centre, Singapore
    Date: 24 June 2013, 3pm

Indian astologer, about 30-40s, plump, 1.85m, well-dressed, montblac pen, panerai watch

    He said:
    – You have a lucky face.
    – 3 good things will occur by August
    – But you have 2 bad habits …. do you want to know?

    I said:
    – No thanks. Bye.

  23. Same thing happened to me today too at Mayfair. I have been approached with the same saying (you have a luck on your face) before but I always ignored them but lately something happened in my life so I would say I was vulnerable. So hearing someone telling I will be lucky I was excited about but then when he asked for money it put me off, I was thinking to give him 1£ but I only had 5£ note and I didn’t gave him that. After not leaving him any money I thought he would put some curse on me but now I know that are just tricking people no divine power.

  24. Same Mr Singh, Berkeley Street, London.

How he knew the name of my brother and initial of my ex-girlfriend I really don’t know because I held the piece of paper in my hand the entire time.

Unfortunately he did the poor/medium/rich thing which started at £100, which I stupidly gave him.

He also got my favourite flower, favourite suit colour (though realistically there’s only two to choose between – grey and blue) and picked the number in my head (though he only gave me from 1-5, excluding 1 and 5, meaning he only had three numbers to choose from in that instance).

But the names were the impressive bit.

He then proceeded to ask my age, and asked for £10 for every day to pray for me etc. At that point I told him he was a very naughty man.

I think £10-£30 would have been a nice amount for quite a cool magic trick … still, I’d love to know how he did the names.

  25. This happened to me in New York City. I’ve lived here 8 years and his is my first encounter of such kind. I was leaving Grand Central to head to my office and an Indian man with a golden ring and reddish wallet stops me. He tells me I have a lucky face and I will have good luck next month. Then writes something on fluorescent pink post it and balls it up and puts it in my hand and tells me to hold onto it. He then proceeds to ask me 3 questions. My Favorite Flower, Favorite Number then my age: O (Orchid) | 9 | 27. He tells me to say some phrase, this is where maybe he switched the paper? And tells me to move the paper from one hand to the other bad luck out good luck in… He tells me to open the paper and it says O | 9 | 27 written vertically just like how he wrote it on his paper. The he shows me a picture of him and some kids and tells me to give him money so he can help the kids. I only had a 20 and wasn’t about to give him my last 20… At this point he knew I was going to walk away and told me he would tell me my mother’s name… I already know my mother’s name lol good day to you sir.

  26. Hey guys, it happened to me in London, few days ago, around Mayfair- Indian guy in black turban, smartly dressed, in his 40s -50s maybe, talking about lucky face. At first I thought that he is some sort of Hindu fortune teller /wacky but positive person, so I stopped and listened, although I usually ignore people talking to me on streets. He kept talking about my lucky face, that I’m lucky but worry too much, he got my attention because he did look friendly and it was intriguing. But then he took out is notepad and started talking A LOT, really fast with strong accent, so I had to concentrate and pay serious attention to his words. (Although in such situation I never fully switch off- i.e. I keep watching my bag and belongings…I don’t trust strangers) He gave me a piece of crumbled paper, same story as above, asking for my numbers, my age, my bf’s age, my favourite number. Guys if you watched any of Derren Brown’s TV programs, you will know there is no magic here involved, no premonition b***ocks , just a trick of mind… I didn’t notice straight away, but I thought about it straight after the weird encounter and it’s simple. First of all, DISTRACTION- fast speech, strong accent, you need to concentrate on that, he makes you think- about your numbers etc. You hold the paper, he tells you to keep it in your palm. Then he quickly asks you to give him the paper, whilst talking blablabla and he hands you paper back- in the meantime he jots on your numbers on it, but he keeps distracting you and at the end you are so dazed and confused , you don’t notice he wrote it when you were standing there next to him!!! Simple trick of mind. Hindu guy wanted money “for a future good luck” and even had 50 quid note in his notepad haha poor soul who gave him that money… I’ve been skint recently, jobless and even if I wasn’t I wouldn’t pay anything, no way. So he got zero, nought, null. It is a scam, psychological one. Seriously , Derren Brown’s TV shows made me more aware of that sort of thing so I won’t be fooled ( for instance D. Brown basically undressed some poor lad in London, took his tie off whilst talking a lot to him and confusing him- and the guy didn’t notice- it is the same type of technique). Spread the word about this trick, I can’t believe some people above gave them any money! Don’t be naive, at the end of the day, what is “luck” anyway? It is entirely up to your actions, not some turban-lad telling you that you’ll have a good month…

  27. I have seen the Indian-turban wearing man around the Oxford St/Mayfair/Jermyn St/Regent St area several times over the last two-three years now. The first time that he came up to me, telling me I had a lucky face, I told him that he simply should not be walking around in London, going up to other people (especially men), and telling them this – I asked him if he was trying to chat me up because if he was that was completely unacceptable and I would not entertain this homoerotic dialogue with him. He then started to talk about all the good luck and fortune stuff and I nipped it in the bud with some rather impolite language. I’ve since seen him around several times over the years, and he will nevertheless come up to me. I’ve previously stopped him from talking to other people on two occasions – once, on Binney St (opposite Selfridges and parallel to Duke St), he was hassling an Italian businessman and was asking to receive some money. I broke up the dialogue and told him where to go. Yesterday evening, I saw him talking to a young woman outside Selfridges – I had to step in seeing him try to take advantage of a vulnerable woman like this. I told him that if I saw him again I would take a photo of him on the spot and ciruclate it to the police. Having done a quick Google search, I can’t beleive the number of people on here who have refrred to him and the sheer amount of money he has obtained from people – on individual occasions and on an aggregate basis. It’s shocking.

  28. I had this today and the corner of Mark lane and eastcheap just as I left the office and was just putting my headphones in to make a call.

Smartly dressed Indian guy stopped me and said I had a lucky face and some other stuff about the lines on my forehead. I only stopped putting my headphones in as I presumed he was going to ask for directions.

I was semi in a rush but rumoured him for a minute and he wrote something screwed up a bit of paper and placed in my right hand. He them asked me for a colour and a number so I said blue and 6 and then started babbling on. I suspect he was then writing this down. He then said something about not knowing me and never having met me before which I agreed before asking to shake my hand (conveniently the one I had the paper in).

Straight away, my first thought was classic switcheroo on the handshake which it probably was realistically.

Then he asked for money and said he started praying for me already. He said he usually asks for 50 or anything (I thought he meant 50p lol) but then said notes not coins!

As luck would have it, I had a grand total of 5p on me and I told him this.

He didn’t believe me and said I was lucky and that
if I opened my wallet I’d find paper in it. Well, knowing I hadn’t been to the cash point I was ready for his miracle and low and behold, he was right. I had paper! Unfortunately for him the paper consisted of receipts 😀

He then told there was a cash machine 150 yards across the road (I know this, I work there!) and I could get cash there. Sensing a chance to crack on and get my train, I just said ok and walked off.

I put my headphones in, started my conversation and walked past the cash machine by which point I’d already forgotten about him. As I got 50 yards past the cash machine someone puts a hand on my shoulder and it’s him pointing back at the cash machine.

I’m busy talking to someone on the phone now but by the point he’s now forced me to turn round, I’m now angry and he can see this so he backs away. If I had had to stop my conversation to deal with this guy believe me he’d have found that I’d have been really pissed to say the least. I’m not a violent person at all but I’m also a very big guy and with a face like thunder (which I had by this point) some people might find that physically threatening

I did check near enough straight away to make sure he’s not a pick pocket as well but fortunately all items like wallet, watch, keys etc all intact.

It seems there’s all sorts of variations of this routine but depending on which it’s either a slight of hand with the paper or a cold read (be honest, a number between 1 and 10 and a colour only leads to so many variables)

Be careful out there folks, if someone stops you for this, it’s purely a basic street magic trick so don’t go parting with your hard earned cash.

  29. I was on a shopping spree in Tooting Broadway. As I crossed a junction off the main road, a young indian boy, maybe aged about 16-17 years old, stopped me and asked me in Hindi where he could find big coconuts for his pooja (some kind of Hindu prayer ceremony).

I directed him towards the high street leading towards (the road between Tooting Broadway tube station and Tooting Bec tube station.

Then he kept staring at my forehead and saying: “You have a blessed face. You know why you have a blessed face, it is because you will have 3 months blessings but for 6 months you have had ups and downs.”

    I’ll be honest, I don’t like the whole fortune-telling crap…

He asked if I was Indian. I said: “No. I’m born here, nationally Bangladeshi.” Then he asked: “Do you know what pooja is?” I said: Yes, kind of. Look no offence but I am a Muslim, and I don’t have anything against hindhus. Just stop with the fortune-telling…Do you want the directions to the shops that may sell coconut or not?”

He said: “OK…Yes…Which way?” Unfortunately, he wasn’t happy with my directions and so said Thank you. Good Luck. Bye.

I thought today was so bizarre but reading everyone else’s comments opened a bigger picture of what really could have happened if I had listened longer. If only this happened in Croydon, I would have taken him to Immigration Office myself, kicking and screaming.

  30. I had a young indian guy approach me in kilburn high road asking for west hampstead station wen I directed him he said I have a lucky face something about da past 3years has been up n down for me financially n health wise. Asked if I get a pain in my neck. Said I was good at heart I help people wen I can. I should give donations. I need more blessings. How I am distanced from relatives. There’s a lady in my life who’s gonna ruin it for me shud stay away. How I work hard but Neva hold into my money. N how i was gonna get a gud news in 7september. Den my name was written on a pier of paper while he had another paper asked me my favourite flower and how many bros I have told him rose and 3 den he told me to open my paper n c if my answer was in mine n it was. I was shocked. He told me if I have something to give him n be will give me his lucky stone n also told me not to tell anybody. U didn’t give him anything. To some if those people who wrote similar things has any thng gud happened as u been told? I dnt believe in dis crap.

  31. I been really scared since dis has happened it was really weird. Can anybody explain it. I’m a Munson person n I am probably such a. Idiot for listening to his crap now I know not gonna help any dot Eva again.

  32. Hi! It just happened to me in Marylebone, London!
Luckily i have only given him 5 pounds. When he said that i had to give him 100, 200 or 300 is when i started thinking that was a scam.
However, somehow he guessed well my girlfriend’s name. i didn’t catch the trick.

  33. This just happened to me and I was so baffled. He told me I had two bad habits and I would be successful in November and have the chance to travel. I gave him a £5 like a wally and he was asking me to go cash machine to get either £30-£60 or £150 to donate to his village!!!

    Never again!!

  34. Just happened to me around an hour ago in Picadilly London. Same paper trick, kissed paper put on forehead, back of neck.. Looking like a complete twat in a suit and parted 10quid! I am so pissed off , but, at the same time, I admire him! He managed to convince me that he is a Yogi man! .. Never mind… Once bitten, twice I punch him! (I won’t buy I will just waste his time)

  35. The way to defeat the trick, if you purposely want to participate in it, is to make some ink mark on the crumpled piece of paper as soon as the psychic gives places it into your palm. Chances are that the psychic will stop the game and says that you have ruined the god’s message and will demand it back from you and warn you not to ink it again. If the psychic has been careless in not noticing what you have done, then you will be able to catch him red handed when he switches the paper and asks you to open it up. You can tell him that it is not the same piece of paper!

  36. Zurich, 23rd august 2013, I have lost my job , I have just been discharged from a job interview and I have lost a lawsuit which is costing me a small fortune. I meet this gentleman in the street and he goes like: ” You are a lucky man, I can see it from your forehead” and I go like “the you must be fucking blind dude, ask Ganesha to recalibrate your third eye”. Man he was mad at me, but I couldn’t stop laughing at his face, so after a while he went away.

  37. The same thing happened to me last week in Ilford and when the guy stopped me and said you have a lucky face, I started crying as i just had an arguement with my husband, he told me to stop crying as he was here to help me, he did the same trick with the flowers and numbers, then he asked for money for charity which i gave , then he said that he would need to pray for me and wrote 3 amounts down and asked me how much i wanted to give, I didn’t have any more money with me so we went to the cash point and i gave hime £51, I gave it with a clean heart but now he keeps on phoning and telling me that he wants to meet again and more prayers need to be done which makes me feel so sad that people would try and get money from you when they know that you are down. I don’t think they are bad people and they definately do have a spiritual gift, I was suppose to meet him today and I found this website so that proves their is a god who has guided me in the right direction, before I would get conned out of giving more money.

  38. Wow! I am so glad I have stumbled upon this page, as I have had the same experience last week – walking down Marlyebone High Street an Indian man approached me and began to speak very mysteriously. I don’t remember how he began the conversation but he wanted to tell me things about me. Among them he knew instinctively I have a double heart line on my hand – i had my hands clenched round my bag – he couldn’t have known – I was so amazed. I think while I was taking this in he said something about due to a heartbreak but I didn’t really listen as I don’t particularly buy that theory. He also knew I had a sister whom he asked, or stated – is very good to me. He said a woman and a man in my life don’t want the best for me because they are jealous. And regarding a family rift or misunderstanding that we should just relax and have coffee and chat about it. He asked me if I had heard of Auras and said most people’s were white but mine was blue. He said I needed to make myself happy and that I hadn’t been since 2009 I had been annoyed with myself and that really I need to make myself happy and not other people. He said my close friends are not really very good friends as they are jealous also.
Then he said I need to make myself happy for my health’s sake, and that my health will/would/is suffering. At one point he said I am sorry your health is not good. He then did the piece of paper trick to hold in my fist and asked for a number below 5 to which I replied 3, and a flower of which I couldn’t think off-hand. He then said most people say rose or lily so I stupidly said rose – I should have gone for something completely different. So anyway he said 3 is travel and October, and so I would travel in October – and rose – actually I can’t remember what he said about rose, but regardless he asked me to open my hand and the paper had three written on one side and rose on the other – I was thinking this has got to be a law of averages trick – maybe I am a typically gullible fool, not to mention the other phrase that could fit on anybody that was you are quite emotional – you are very up and very down and you have been sad – you are not a depressed person you are actually a very positive person but you can be sad. I mean who wouldn’t relate to that? Finally he asked me to open up the paper and spoke about the numbers written in the corner which related to the amount of money he wanted for the ‘reading’ of course I said I had no money to give him – I looked him straight in the eye, but unlike previous posters – he didn’t argue, he just said ok and walked away.
Afterwards I wanted to run back to him to ask him why he gives random people this information and then asks for money, because its not really very fair, but i didn’t.

  39. Same thing happened to me in Draycott Avenue in London 2 weeks ago. Fortunately I spotted the paper switch as the bit of paper he asked me to open up was smaller than the blank piece that he had told me to scrunch up earlier and hold in my hand before he took it and passed it back for me to reveal his prediction. So I told him he had made the switch and we walked away. He didn’t even protest! Amazingly my girlfriend and I continued left onto the Fulham Road and saw three other ‘fortunetellers’ chatting to other unsuspecting victims. I even told one group who had just walked away if they knew it was a slight of hand illusion from which I had just narrowly escaped. They were quite upset as I think they wanted to believe it was real. Don’t we all?!? The worrying thing of course is that there is a syndicate working the area…

  40. Same thing happened to me today while walking in high st Kensington towards knightbridge an Indian man said “you are a very lucky guy”while passing by me so I stoped and said excuse me. ??? And he repeated what he said then started saying something about three lines on my forehead and there is a luck sign between my eyes and in the next 3 months ill be so lucky but I need to stop thinking and i have 2 bad habits which will affect my success so I just replied that i do not have anything to think about at all and I’m very successful and he walked away

  41. Same happened to me in a shopping mall in Singapore while I was a tourist. The same same, Rose, 7, some people around you is jealous of you… etc. Of course money the temple and the hungry Indian children…

I am a fool. I gave him S $40. He insisted that I should round it up to $50 but I declined. He then offer to tell me more but I declined. I think S $10 would have been too much! Pls don’t fall into it like me!!

  42. This happened to me about 6 hours ago in Mayfair, he definitely did not swap the paper as I had held it tight in my hands and I stayed at least 1 metre away from him the whole time. Very spooky experience which sadly turned nasty when he asked if I had am I poor, medium or rich in which case I should pay him £100, £200 and £300 respectively, also pushing me to get money from a cash machine. I am still baffled by how accurate some of the things he said, he said he needed money for the starving children in India. I gave him £5 and said he could have it as a donation for the children and a very good magic trick. He kept asking me to get more money but I walked off. I feel stupid for giving him any money, but at the same time, very freaked out by some of the things he said. I hope I bump into him again, and ask him to predict some really obscure stuff.

  43. Same thing happened to me twice in Singapore, once in March 13 in Suntec city and the latest incident was yesterday at One Raffles Quay.
Two different men though.. The March guy was elderly& plump and the other guy was tall, young, thin.
Same line “You have a blessed face. I can tell that from your forehead”.
Just that both the times I didn’t stop to listen to them.
First time I just laughed at the incident and thought it to be a weird experience, especially because when I met this guy I was super hassled about something and it was very apparent on my face. But when the same thing happened yesterday (once again I was a bit hassled), I got a bit curious and looked up online and guess what, there have been so many people who have had same experience and that too in different parts of the world. Guess, they have an expertise on finding their target well.

  44. there are a groups of Indian/sri lankan guys who patrol the Mayfair area fleecing gullible tourists of a few quid doing the same lucky face story to get your attention,i work in the area and always stop if i see them talking to people to tell them its a con, they don’t like it but are hardly going to complain to the police.if you see it pass on the news that they are con men.

  45. I had that happening too here in The Hague. Met him on the street near home couple of years ago. Can’t remember what he told me back then, something about that I was lucky and some stuff that was true enough at that time, but I was on my way to somewhere. Still remember that I was stunned though that how can he know? Now, after all that time I met him again in the city centre of all people that are walking he told me I was lucky, also that I have some troubles with a woman causing me hurt in health and work. I am going to be 91, darnit I didn’t wanna know that! 😀 But the truth is, he did tell me some things he couldn’t possibly know, that I’ve been blessed by many angels in my life recently and that I know (which is true). I worry too much, but next month I will receive good fortune. Well, bring on next month then! Right atm I do have issues at work with a woman from HR who is making me miserable and wants to get rid of me cause I got a burnout so perhaps we will come to an agreement there and they pay me to leave. Anyways, when he asked money I told them that maybe god send him to me to give him a message too, to never ask for money and to leave it up to the goodness of people to give whatever they like. Left without paying anything. 😀
    Still flabberghasted though!

  46. Sloane Street, Knightsbridge. Got done by the Yogi Man today. A very clever scam and still no idea how he did the paper switch. I was expecting it and didn’t give him a chance to swap. Worth a £5 for the entertainment.

  47. I cant believe it happened to all of you guys. it happened to me a year ago in switzerland (ZH) as well and i totally believed it and even gave him a lot of money! i am kinda religious and believe there is a god. i was having a difficult time and did not know what to do with myself. i prayed and asked god for help and said i wished i could talk to him so he could tell me whats the right thing to do.
a few days later i met this indian guy while walking to the train station who said to me “you’re lucky”. i was like “thank you?” and kept walking. and he was like “but you think too much.” which was true at that time.
somehow we started talking. he told me god sent him so he could talk to me through him. and that if god appeared in his form i would be scared thats why he chooses the look of a human being so i wont be scared.
i was shaking, a few days ago i wished i could talk to god and now there is that guy on the street telling me god sent him to talk to me??????
he said he was my guardian angel. i asked him if everybody has one and he said just a few chosen people and i was one of them. i was lucky. he said he prays a lot and god showed him my face around a week ago. he knew he would find me this afternoon.
i felt so happy and overwhelmed and saved?? and understood.
he did the same trick on me like on all of you guys. to prove to me that he was not “human”.
but i was holding the paper in my hand and there was no way he switched it out???? i just googled it now because i wanted to know how it worked. however i was holding it in my hand the whole time, very tightly. there is no way he could have switched it.

after reading the post of cadillac pinkney. i do believe this was real what happened to me. even tho everyone else on here says it was a trick. i did feel blessed when that happened to me=)
and yes he gave me his number too.

  48. I now feel paranoid that this website is just for collecting my data…

Can’t believe I have just been swindled out of £50.00. On the 2nd time of running into the the Yogi….!!

1st Time – Blackfriars but I had no money but kept the pieces of paper as I thought they meant something.
2nd time (one year on), I have just met (what I thought was the same guy) but had some compelling insight into my future based on a phone call I had just had not 10 minutes prior to bumping into him….

I feel stupid for falling for it if it was a trick to fleece people – and he now has my number, so if I start to get phone calls I will know where to tell him to go!

    Aggrieved!

  49. I can’t believe so many people are falling for this – no wonder they keep doing it!

I’ve been told I have a lucky face or whatever numerous times, I just keep walking. I guess it helps I have absolutely no interest in knowing my future ahead of time – if true, it would be boring to know in advance; if false, it would be a waste of everyone’s time.

The con is the same that fortune tellers use – they say something very generic that nevertheless might have a very specific meaning to some; they are probably also pretty good at reading your facial expressions to see if they hit a nerve with something.

Don’t feel sad you paid them – these guys actually have some skill.

  50. Heeeey! I’m feeling so stupid. It has just happened to me. Same guy with same tricks in Bangkok. Hahahaha his rate was 1200eur 500eur or 100eur. I said: “hey man i’m a bagpacker, no money!” He sAid…ok then do you have any cell phone for me.

I gave him 2000 bht…jesus!!! At least i had fun with him. He is the Copperfield of yogis!!!! Im still laughing…thanks for sharing!
