It’s seems like I’m not the only one who’s having problems talking lately. Not talking in general, but talking about emotive issues (i.e. the war, politics, etc.) Normally I’m perfectly happy to be contrary and debate with people, but I just find it much more difficult these days. It’s not simply that it requires more effort, but it also takes so much time and seems completely pointless.
An example. I keep up to date on world politics and the progress of the war such that I consider myself pretty well informed compared to the average. So when I hear someone in Cambridge expound offhandedly on how “it’s all about the oil,” I just sigh to myself and wonder why people insist on seeing the world in such simple terms.
In the past I might have started up a good argument about it, but now I just can’t be bothered. There are too many incorrect assumptions and thought processes that I have to explain. It’s not about the war being a good idea or a bad idea, it’s about people not having the ability to think or gather alternative information sources properly. Maybe the war just brings all of this into relief.
