BBC and China

Now that I’ve subscribed to the BBC RSS feeds, I’m automatically notified when new stories are added. I’m also told when old stories are updated, and while most of the time this is irritating, occasionally you see something interesting. Take this story entitled China grapples with net dilemma, for example. Over the course of a few hours, its byline changed from:

China is desperate to catapult the nation into a technological future but with it may come many of the freedoms associated with the internet.

to

China is keen to embrace a technological future but with it may come many of the freedoms associated with the internet.

Obviously the second version is more diplomatic (whether it’s more accurate is another question) but considering that BBC News Online is apparently blocked by the Chinese firewalls, I’m not sure what the point is. In any case, it’s interesting to see the BBC’s editors at work.
