I’d been walking back from a meeting in town when it suddenly began raining. I’m the type of person who packs an umbrella even at the slightest possibility of rain – in fact, at school my friends found it amusing how I always seemed to have an umbrella even in the middle of summer.

Lately though, I’d begun relying on a new weather app that provided very reliable hour-by-hour rain predictions to figure out what to wear in the morning – a sort of just-in-time clothing process – and today it told me the probability of rain was very low, hence no umbrella. And so here I was, sheltering underneath an awning waiting for the pedestrian lights to turn green, speaking to a guy who’d just been standing there.

I hadn’t noticed him at first; I was listening to a podcast of This American Life, the one about Father’s Day, and it took a while for me to realise he was actually trying to speak to me. The man was smartly dressed, wearing a dark suit jacket over an open-necked white shirt. He didn’t look like a weirdo, but you never know. I took one earbud out and turned towards him.

“You have a lucky face,” he said.

I laughed. “Thanks,” I said, thinking that he was just in a cheerful mood.

“You have a very lucky face,” he continued. “I can tell from your eyes and your mouth.”

“Hmm,” I said.

“But you look worried, you are frowning here,” he said, gesturing above my nose. “You should know that you will have good luck in the next three months, you will work hard but you will get what you are looking for.”

Ah, I thought, a fortune-teller. I glanced up at the lights; they were still red, and the rain was still coming down.

“Do you want to know why I think this? Let me tell you.” He slipped a red wallet made from leather out of his jacket and pulled out a few small bits of paper and a pen. He scribbed a few words on a scrap of paper, then crumpled it up into a little ball and gave it to me. “Don’t open it yet,” he said.

I took the paper and stuck it in my pocket.

“Okay, now pick a number from 1 to 9.”

Before I went to university, I thought I was interested in genetics and molecular biology. After precisely one lecture, I realised exactly how wrong I was and became determined to switch to something more stimulating, and I eventually found myself taking experimental psychology and neuroscience lectures. Many of them were highly reductionist or focusing on development or pathology, but some were at the cognitive level, and from them and from various textbooks I knew all about how humans reason and how poor we are at understanding logic and probability and causation.

They didn’t teach us specifically about magic, but it was clear that our limited capacity for attention and our ease of being misdirected was really the key to successful magicians. I once saw David Blaine perform a bit of magic at a TED conference. I was standing about one metre away from him when he did a fairly standard card trick on a guy he was close enough to touch, and then at the end gave the guy his watch back. We were all duly impressed; we had all been watching his hands intently, wanting to be the one person who was smart enough to see the trick, to figure out the ending. But he was too good.

“3,” I said, shrugging. He noted it down on a new piece of paper.

“Your favourite colour?”

The lights had turned green. This was the perfect opportunity to escape, but I wanted to see where this was going.

“Blue.” Why not?

“Your age?”

“Uh… 28.”

“How many brothers and sisters?”

“One.”

“Brother or sister?”

“Brother.” He wrote down ‘B – 1’ at the bottom of his list.

“Okay.” He looked up. “And what do you want most? Good health, good life, good fortune, good love, good family?”

I laughed. What an absurd question. “All of them,” I said.

For the first time, he laughed as well. “You have to pick one.”

“Okay then… good family.” He wrote down ‘G – F’.

He asked me for his bit of paper he’d given me at the start. I pulled it out of my pocket and handed it over, and he waved it in front of his face at precise points, and gave it back to me. “Don’t open it,” he said again. Then he began talking about how the numbers all added up and how if you combined this and that, I would figure out my fortune.

I was starting to finally get worried. I figured that he’d be asking for money shortly, and things had gone on for long enough that it was already going to be embarrassing when I left. With the lights back to green again, I backed away and said that I had to go now.

“No no no no no, we haven’t finished yet!”

“Sorry,” I said lamely.

“But you haven’t opened the paper!” he protested.

“Sorry,” I repeated behind me.

Befitting my status as a former scientist and being an avid reader of all the science blogs and such, I’m intensely suspicious of superstition. I have no problem with black cats. I deliberately walk underneath ladders. I’m sure I’ve broken at least two mirrors. But walking away from this guy, I couldn’t help but think I’d somehow cursed myself by not letting him finish his shtick; it was surely a rude thing to do, no matter how (eventually) annoying he had become.

Of course, I opened the paper. Written on it was:

3
Blue
0 – 28
B -1
G -F

For about three seconds, I froze.

Firstly, I thought: Wow, could it be true? Did this guy actually figure this out? Have I been completely wrong about all of this my entire life?

Secondly: Obviously not. But what are the chances of him guessing? Still pretty high – certainly not high enough to get a decent hit rate.

Thirdly: Wait a second… he must have done a classic switcheroo while I wasn’t looking! This must be the same bit of paper he’d been writing my answers on, and when he was waving it around, he’d swapped them over.

Aha. I felt proud of myself at this piece of Sherlockian deduction, then slightly sad. It was a tremendously engrossing piece of street magic; certainly not that technically impressive, but no doubt more than good enough to fool the average passerby. I wondered how much money he made by doing this. I wondered what he would have told me next.

And I wondered whether this was his life, giving other people a glimpse ahead into their lives. Giving them a certainty, proven with written evidence and without any caveats or probabilities or qualifications, that things were going to get better. I looked down at the piece of paper again, thought about whether to throw it away or not, and kept on walking.

  1. Saw this guys by the name of Kamal Yogi 3 days ago in Toronto. Like many people he did the Rose, 7. What I can’t explain is the following. He asked to name three fruits. So I said grapefruit, apple and orange. He said to me if you had to remove one which one would it be. I said grapefruit. So he cross it off the paper. Then he said between Apple and Orange which would would you circle. I said Orange? So he circle orange. So we were left with Apple. Where he originally wrote 7 on his piece of paper. He asked me to put my thumb on 7 on his sheet of paper. He held my other hand and we did this praying for about 20 seconds repeating his words. He said lift your thumb and to my surprise the word Apple was underneath the 7 which was not there before….I was impress he gave me this little moon gem to keep with me. He also gave me his Indian phone number. It was a nice experience.

  2. ALL OF THESE ARE SCAMS. IN INDIA IT IS SO WELL KNOWN THAT THESE SORT OF CHARACTERS ARE SET UPON BY HONEST PEOPLE. IF YOU ARE PREPARED TO PAY FOR A LITTLE ENTERTAINMENT THEN SO BE IT, BUT THIS PRACTICE IS FRAUDULENT AND POTENTIALLY A CRIMINAL OFFENCE. IF SOMEONE IS COLLECTING MONEY FOR A ‘GOOD CAUSE’ ASK THEM THE NUMBER OF THEIR REGISTERED CHARITY. IF THEY DO NOT PROVIDE A REGISTERED CHARITY NUMBER THEY ARE SCAMMERS!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

  3. place : raffles city shopping centre, singapore
    time/ date : 1pm , 4 Sep 2016

30ish, around 165cm, relatively fair skinned (by indian standards) yogi man from india in a shirt and jeans with his hair tied in a bun calls out to me on the escalator with the opening line everyone here has heard “you have a lucky face!”

the fortune telling starts, blah blah blah says God/karma has led us to meet, we should go to KFC/Macs to talk for 2-3min and he will tell me my whole fortune…now as a girl you DON’T just follow any random stranger somewhere even in broad daylight unless you’re looking for trouble so I’m looking for ways to escape already

no paper switch nor money asked…I’m sure i had a Very disbelieving look the whole time

in any case i got away by saying i was going to meet my mum and if I don’t hurry over I’ll get a scolding (which is true, my mum is the exceptionally impatient sort)

he let me off with a smile and handshake

Googled to see any curses might follow :]

  4. This guy is still around – met today outside Chuchill hotel in Portman square – he didn’t get any money out of me but was calming and charming – no turban but I keep going ov the scrumpled paper thing in my head tryna remember did he write it before or after or what? Anyway no harm done – didn’t tell me anything different but had a lousy day an for a short while at least he cheered me up with the thought things will change. Everyone has to earn a living somehow. Some do it at knife point. Some with numbers and roses.

  5. Same exact thing happend to my dad. He was in Knightsbridge when the man passed him and said “you’ve got a lucky face”. My dad turned around to find the man standing facing him. Dad then approached the man and said what do you mean?
Man then told him in 3 months something big was going to happen to him. In a good way. So my dad sat with the man as he explained what he does “raise money for homeless people”. He showed my dad a book with photos of the man sitting and eating with the homeless. Then, similar with your stories, he asked my dad his favourite colour and a number between 1 and 5. Then he asked my mums name and same thing. The name was written and spelt correctly on the piece of paper. So my dad was amazed with what this guy had done.

Then he asked for £100 to help feed the homeless but my dad only gave him £10 as thats all he had on him. The man was dressed smartly and didn’t smell bad or anything. I just think its a horrible thing to lie about the reason they’re “raising money”. Anyway, if this guy approaches again I’ll be sure to confront him.

  6. I just had a terrible experience with this today. Had exactly the same thing happen in Zurich. He started of by saying I had a good Aura but it was blocked…. He then did the whole paper thing which I belive to be the kind of magic Derran Brown is up to. It’s impressive but, in my opinion, just deception. The problem I had was that during the whole spiel he was telling me stuff about myself that made a lot of sense and that had recently been bothering me. I’d even been thinking about it just before he arrived – he said he could tell something deep was troubling me. Before I knew it I was hooked on talking to him and hoping he would in some way help me with my problems…. of course before long it became apparent he wanted money. I literally had nothing. And I mean nothing. Then he wanted my power bank that I had for my mobile phone. This seemed a bit on the criminal side. He then showed me pictured of dying children – huge guilt trip. Eventually he went and was very pleasant about the whole thing. I then carried on with my day. I’ve recently been struggling with anxiety and depression and have been trying to tackle it. Unfortunately when I got home the things this random guy had presumed to say about me hit me hard. I got very anxious and ended up in a real mess. The depression that followed was intense. All I can say is I want to find this guy and tell him how dangerous what he is doing is. Some people, including myself, are really trying to make a difference to our lives but may also very vulnerable. I am a straight forward person who is struggling with something and I feel deeply cheated. I realise It’s my responsibility not to be taken in by people like that but life would be a little more straight forward if people could just ask for money rather than pretending to psychoanalyse you, make you feel like you are in some way flawed and thenot offer fake hope. I’m very glad if people get some joy from this, but sadly I am not one of them and worry if there are others in my position who have had a similar experience. Not impressed!

    1. I know you wrote this a while ago but exactly the same thing happened to me and I was vulnerable and going through some difficulties when I was approached particularly anxiety surrounding a break up. I was looking for answers and this guy claiming to be a prophet approached me saying I had a good aura and I was very lucky. He then went on to tell me some info about myself which seemed realistic and did the whole paper thing and I happened to chose rose 7 which I’m learning is a common guess. He told me some more info about myself showed me a picture in his wallet of children he was collecting money for and I fell for it and have him £20. He gave me his number, stupidly I called him to meet again and told me he would come back another day. Where I was so confused at that time I felt like I was getting the answers I needed. This is where it got weird and darker… he called me one evening asking if I was alone he proceeded to tell me the ultimatum if I got back with my ex wouldn’t be good and I would become unwell. Said I would be on tablets. Told me my ex was confused and wanted two women. Told me I had bad Karma because of a previous life, I was walking in darkness and someone close to me cursed me etc etc and that he could remove all the curses. At this point I said I’m ok and hung up. He proceeded to text me twice offering his service but I said I’m fine and blocked him. Obviously got back with my ex, but due to this and previous issues anxiety and depression went through the roof and I broke up with him. But this has literally made a bad situation even worse. Keep questioning how he knew details about me… seems like its a mixture of guessing and mind reading. Worse thing darkness he made me unwell giving me paranoia whilst grieving a relationship. This people don’t give a shit just go around ruining peoples lives. I was stupid enough to let him so take full accountability but literally one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made!

  7. Rue du Vermont, Geneva, Switzerland, 14:00h.

Happened today with me. Similar description and scenario of the indian guy wearing a turban.

At the end I’ve said I had no money with me. Then he answered, “so you have your credit card”. He was not much happy with the coins I’ve offered but anyway said November will be a great period at job.

  8. Man. Im so scared that they want my money. Im afraid of these people now.

It happened yesterday in Clapham Common. A guy came to be and said that i was lucky and we spoke about the future and what i wanted… then after all the trickery with the paper and numbers and colours he asked for money and i gave him 55quid thinking itll go to charity. But the next day the same guy, Panna said that his teacher wanted to see me. So the next day i go at meet Panna and his teacher and he said to bring aluminium paper , water and salt. We spoke at the common and said he could take my problem away and then asked me for over 3K. I said no. He said he needs it for materials to pray for me. Then he said okay 350 quid now and rest later. I said i agree but i had to go home to get the money. They waited for me and clapham common but didnt return. I feel upset as i thought the money was going for a good cause….
Stay away these people blackmail you and i feel like giving the number to the police.

  9. Damn! Happened to me too… In bangalore… Man with black turban …!

  10. Just happened to me in Campden Street, Notting Hill. He started the conversation with “you have a great aura”. He touched on some strangely applicable details but I guess everyone has the same problems with life so it’s pretty easy to use. He then wrote on a piece of paper and crumpled it before handing it to me to keep in my pocket. After a brief conversation and some prophecies he had me write on a notepad 3 numbers between 1 and 9 as well the name of a loved one. He took the notepad back and we talked some more before he requested the paper from my pocket be removed and opened before I could open it he immediately took it from me and showed me to tap my head three times and passed it back (he accidentally dropped it on the floor). I picked it up and did the head tap thing and opened it. The numbers were exact but the name spelling was incorrect by one letter. After a story about him feeding poor children and showing me a photo I gave him all the shrapnel I had in my wallet (maybe £2 worth) and he asked about bank cards so I said thank you and goodbye.

  11. Hi there guys, may my GOD bless this guru guy. Im from Cape Town South Africa. The similor thing happened to me yesterday. I was visiting a furniture shop and at that time was sitting in the seat of the owner. This guy came in looking for the owner. When he looked at me he said, in December 2 things good will happen to you. He ask to speak to me private, then everything happens, the small torned piece with the numbers and flower names, and money based on hungery children pics. I gave him money, then he wanted to give me a very small lucky stone, i didnt touched that stone and told him that JESUS is the only rock i need in my life. After everything i followed him a few steps behind to the door, as i came to the door he vanished. Then my colique told me my money was hanging out of my back pocket. As i checked it was still there, a R1000 was gone. I still feel funny inside, not a pain and not something that i can explain. BE VERY CAREFULL, DONT EVEN SPEAK TO THEM, HE TRAPS YOU THE MOMENT YOU SHOW INTREST. HE WILL EMPTY YOUR POCKETS.

  12. Looks like I’ve been had as well! Met Indian guy in Piccadilly ‘lucky face’ paper trick (blue, 3 and rose). Told me next three years would be lucky and I’d been afflicted by black magic! He’d pray and remove it. Told me some personal things and like a bloody mug (because I didn’t want to be cursed!) I ended up parting with £100!

    Pfffftttt!

  13. Omg this just happened to me while i was having a cigarette break at my office building. Indian guy who says i have a very lucky face, like her sister. then proceed to tell me he’s from Hong Kong and tell me I’m gonna be super lucky next month! and the same paper trick. Holy! he asked for money but unfortunately, i can only offer cigarettes. LOL.

    Im in singapore CBD area!

  14. This has just happened to me behind Piccadilly circus where all the shirt stores are. The guy was wearing a blue bumper jacket. He looked smart. I have read the whole trail of message and feel slightly depressed because I am from Lagos, where it is difficult to con people. I have a Master’s degree and would regard myself as streetwise but he out did me. He did the whole question routine age, number of children, what was I thinking of right now. I was careful and did not notice any change of paper as he still had the paper, he wrote on. I was only glad that I was not the one who parted with the most money on this page. I lost £20 and do not intend to tell anyone else about my sheer stupidity. May be I should though. I hope I don’t see him again because I shall have some magic for him too, and he shall see it coming.

  15. Couple guys knocked on my door and said i’m a good person, which I can be sometimes. Done the flower and number tricks which they got right, but I still was not amazed..

Then asked me to write down my mums name without them being able to see, he was also writing occasionaly on his notepad. Hethen showed me his paper that he’d been writing on and it had my mums name on it, totally blew me away!!!

So I gave them £60 for the entertainment, well worth it as it kept my mind occupied the whole day!

  16. it happened to me in leicester square. Bloody he used me. I believed in him as my family back in India is going through tough times. Stupid me. But in the end he gave me a lucky charm?!! white stone. i now feel so so stupid.

  17. Met an Indian with short hair cut near Bank station, london. Told me I will be lucky from February 2017 onward. Ask a color and number from 1-100. Got both of them right.

    1. well…did you become luckier ever since?

  18. Groenplaats, Antwerp, Belgium. 24 oct ’16. 18:15.

Indian guy, blue Louis Vuitton jacket.
    He had a clean look.

Everything was like the stories described above.
The only thing I’m thinking about is how he managed to switch the piece of paper. I held it in my hand firmly the whole time. The only moment I can imagine is when he blew on my hand. I guess I made it tough on him because he had to do that twice..

I didn’t get robbed, got everything still in my pockets, always held a distance from him. Gave him €6, and I don’t regret it, it was a very good trick and it made me think for a while.

  19. Same here in Zurich earlier today. I completely fell for it and gave him a reasonable donation. The more you give this guy the more he’s trying to cheat you out of – offering prayers for you over …days back in India and all this crap.

He made me write down all sorts of things which I then had to hold tight in my hand without showing/giving it to him and he of course knew everything I wrote – all the names of loved ones, whatever wishes or problems I wrote down. The short and sweet of it is that he’s super talented and should be in sales (well he is, isn’t he) and I’m joining the list of gullible idiots all around the world that fell for this. He wanted to cheat me out of even more money and when I pushed back he tried to fix a new appointment to meet again at the same place in the future. Not sure what the morale of the story is…I guess I paid for some amazing street performance and I’ll move on.

  20. Many years ago, I came across one of these scammers who tricked me into parting with plenty of $$$. That caused me to be very wary, suspicious and cynical of strangers showing any trust or being too friendly.

Needless to say, I was still faced with some serious personal issues/problems which were now confounded with losing money as well.

So when I came across some peeps who offered “something for nothing”, I was very sceptical and wary of looking for the ‘catch’. Thing is, there wasn’t any.

I couldn’t believe, in this day and age of constant individualism and competition to try and beat everyone else in just about everything, these folks genuinely wanted to help others who might be in a vulnerable position.

No religious undertones, no ‘donations’, no ‘brain-washing or cultist nonsense – simply being there for someone else who might just need some support, advice or guidance from another.

Now I am in a good place.

  21. I had this happen to me on October 28th, in Tottenham court rd, I was just sitting in cafe ( outside space) and he walked past me and said I had 3 things on my forehead which meant good luck or something.

Description : 5’6″ Indian man with thick dark hair and big easy eyes.

Did the paper trick but as far as I can remember he would put a scrunched up paper in my hand ( which I held tight shut) and then ask me the questions.
    Number between 1-7 ( not inclusive) – 5
    Flower : rose
All of this would be in the piece of paper I would have in my hand as I would unscrunch it.

Said some generics things already mentioned:
Bad 6 months but now will be good
I’m good to my friends, but they profit from me
I work hard at work but am lazy otherwise

He did guess where my parents live which is pretty obscure which is what freaked me out.
    And made me believe him.
Did he whole poor, mid and rich lady : £50,£7″,£100
I said 70 but he insisted on 100, not sure why I even went and took the money out, he did the whole picture thing , but just a random picture of a whole bunch of kids.
I gave him £100, then he repeated everything he already had. Gave me a stone kept on trying to as for another £200 and I got annoyed and he “offered” to give my money back.

In the moment I believed what he was saying and doing, said was a Yogi and gave me his number and said he could come to my house and put a picture up to give me good luck and bless my house and insisted I call him. I obviously haven’t bothered checking the number.
It was totally out of character for me to even talk to someone like this so am very annoyed at myself for parting with this money, am hoping that it is put to good use.

    He did the paper trick

    1. I was approached by the same man (I think) on Charlotte St (parallel to Tottenham Crt Road). Said exactly the same things (including about laziness) then tried to ask for money in exchange for a charm as well. I said I wasn’t able to and he asked for my phone number as well. The whole thing really freaked me out.

  22. Very similar thing happened with me today. Sadly I see posts against yogis and Indians and I am a proud latter. Such people in the name of our ancient culture make people fool. One can easily call it a very smart trick to loot people’s hard earned money.

So I was about to get to the metro when this Sikh guy stopped me asking for donation regarding an upcoming sikh festival. I happily gave him a ₹100 bill. He asked for more. I gave ₹50 extra too. Then he starts saying about my face. (I realise now that when he asked for the money second time, it was to test me if i can be persued). Like all you people I was asked to pick numbers, a bird and a flower. He got all right, as expected. As the first time I saw this live, I must say I did get interested. Then he writes random 3 letters. With the help of these he calculates to ₹3300 and says in order to revive my life from its problems, I will have to donote to his charity. I told him that I didnt have money. But he remained persuasive. I told him that I can show him I had nothing in my bag. He then “adjusts” to half of 3300. When I disagreed again, what shook me was his statement! He suggests me to go to the atm and get the cash.

That was my limit. I threw off his paper. And got moving towards my metro.

Such a pity guys, people have lowered themselves to such an extent.

  23. Lol… Just happened to me too just now, in Melbourne, Australia. I thought was quite weird for someone to tell me that i have a happy face. My response: yeah, i know, thanks i kept walking. He did too asked me if i wanted to know why, i said, no need thanks. Then i thought… wt? And checked on the net… Wowwww can’t believe. Glad i didn’t bothered to stop!

  24. Also caught in Pitt St. Sydney as Sally above was earlier this year. Same man as he also asked for $50. I believe I was approached as I may have appeared disoriented and was coming down from an anxiety attack (but was not agitated), and he correctly assumed that my anxiety began from experiences in 2014 and 2015 and was influenced by money passing through my hands as soon as I’d earned it, and a lack of reciprocation from people in my life.

He repeated a few times that January would be a very lucky month for me and that he would pray for me, and gave me a small seashell like stone to carry with me as a token to focus on in times of stress or something. From the crumpled piece of paper he placed in my palm he’d correctly written blue which was the colour I said when he asked for a favourite, which was probably easy as I was carrying a blue backpack and wearing a blue t-shirt underneath a grey hoodie. He didn’t ask about numbers or flowers.

I knew I was caught in a con but didn’t feel bitter during or after the experience, it just felt surreal and weirdly comforting. I tried to only part with $20 when he asked for $50 but he insisted I give him another $20. I’ve parted with larger sums of money in worse experiences this year and just chalked this up to money I’d part with during my Christmas shopping.

I usually always wear large headphones when walking through the CBD alone to avoid being approached by sales, charities, and homeless (let’s face it they’re all a con), and this was a rare moment when I wasn’t. I’m actually going to keep the stone on me in case this ever happens again.

  25. this happened to me in a car park of a westfield shopping mall in Melbourne, Australia.

  26. Aug 2009- Singapore

I had just migrated to Singapore as a Grad student in NTU. I was very new to the country. Prior to that, I had been seriously ill back in India. I happened to meet a Sikh in Little India, who said that I had been very ill in the recent past. I naturally got curious. He said that my illness was because of black magic done by my relatives, and he predicted dire trouble for me and my family if I did not pay him money – S$ 2500, to be specific. He said that the money would be spent on removing the black magic from me and my family, and redirecting it to my Uncles’s family. I was not carrying cash, and he directed me to go to the ATM. I was really scared, and did as he said. To cut a long story short- he was not satisfied with that amount. Each day, he made me pledge a further amount, saying that all the amount spent would go waste (and a lot of calamities would befall) if I did not spend further. I paid him through various means- cash and gold biscuits. He kept in touch through phone, and kept giving me different advice, and kept asking me for money. I even got to know his name- Santokh Singh, as I wired money to him. And he warned me against mentioning this to anyone (even my family), as that could make the black magic stronger. He promised me a lot of professional and personal success in the years to come, if only I heeded his words.

I eventually had to cut-off from him as he had become too demanding. But the effect of the incident left me drained completely. The combination of guilt, shame, and embarrassment was unbearable. As it is, I had taken money from my family under false pretense. Being a student, I did not have much money of my own. And there was the persistent dread that I was indeed afflicted with black magic.

I had become a complete wreck. None of his promises came true. In fact, the exact opposite indeed took place. And the incident affected me so much that I alienated myself. Many years have passed. But that incident still lingers in my mind. I have not been able to develop a stable relationship, as I am afraid of this secret of mine. Neither have I been professionally stable. Unlike the above cases, I was associated with the s0-called mystic for more that three months. And it did me badly.

I do wonder why Governments even issue visas to such people, without a background check. And if there are people like me, there should be a platform for them to come out, without the fear of being judged. And I also wonder why do these ‘mystics’ lack the basic compassion for humanity.

  27. I also met this guy full of tricks. I just gave him 10$. According to me unless you are not giving them a big money its absolutely fine. I dont know why people are here with negative views. I think its just a street entertainment. Like we go to watch a movie so nobody let us there for free. Or when we go to disneyland. So chill folks. Dont think that shit like black magic or curse bla bla bla. Take it easy. Its entertainment if U like it, giving away few dollars not gonna make you poor. And if you dont like it just walk away. I am sorry if anybody dont like my comment!

  28. Yep, met the same indian guy like everyone described here just now in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia nearby KLCC.

He greeted me with the same lucky face sentences, and asked for me to show my hand.

Told him that I was busy, plus he’s looking fishy with one arm hidden inside his pocket all the time.

Those in nearby area just be be careful okay.

  29. a man with a turban approached me and said things like “you have a luck face” and “you are blessed”. He then continued with things like you have been in bad luck and gave correct dates and that he had more information.

I met him in westfield stratford,

He was a posing as a spiritual healer and collecting money for ajmer sharif charity in India. He did tricks with pieces of paper that he gave into my hand and asked me to keep my hand closed. Then he asked me various questions and asked me to write down the answers on a piece of paper (whilst I had the scrunched of piece of paper in my hand). He asked me then to open the piece of paper in my hand and to compare what was written on the paper with what I had written. The 2 papers were identical except (I think his hand writing was in capitals). No idea how he did this but I know I was tricked after reading about the same man duping other people in the same way around various locations in central london.

He used “religion” and that I was not practicing to gain money from me which would be used to feed the poor people in India Ajmer.

He also did another paper trick where the end result……resulted with a small black face on the inside of my hand and he claimed that was a demon that was following me. The demon face on my hand really confused me as it couldn’t be explained. It was the strangest thing I had ever experienced in my life. Totally bizarre. I felt really scared and confused by what I saw. The black face on my hand dissapeared very quickly.

He at that point used my confusion to take money £1100 from me for charity.

After reading about similar events on the internet, I know I have been tricked. He used special paper to trick me.

  30. Happened to me today, it kind of felt magical after the meeting with him, he looked trust worthy with a kind face , so when he said ” you have a lucky face”, I thought no harm listening to what this guy has to say about my luck, I actually do feel lucky these days…. I do believe everything happens for a divine reason…so I kept an open mind for all things…

Where: wan chai Hong Kong tech expo
Tricks or “magic” : square papers, number 3, rose , blue
My “future”: meeting a person with a name “xin” in October, where he will steal my idea
Other Comments: I have a jealous friend
    His name:raj
What he wore: blue button shirt

Iv spent a few hours reading ALL the comments above before writing this, and almost everyone says 3 and rose, this feels really spooky, read one comment about them being claravoiyant , or using spirits to conduct this trick, I kind of believe that so part of me is a bit glad I didn’t just left without paying him, I only paid hkd 100 (around 15usd) cause I’m short in cash , actually don’t rmb a period where I’m not short in cash, so too bad for him, he should have chosen someone with more to give! Also these indian men seem to make the same comment to everyone, “jealous friend”, “someone steals your idea”, it seems they just stick to that story since it’s the story that works for them, cause when he opened that brown wallet it has 500hkd notes, so I probably wasn’t the first one he caught at the expo.
at first he wanted to talk in private, that was the part I put my guard up, but was also curious of what was this about , then I suggested we just keep walking ,as I always believe as long you have a good heart , even someone planning to con you won’t manage to get through you… then he managed to persuade me to walk to a less crowded area where there was a table, and he even took a brochure from one of the expo booths to use as his props, to pretend that he was discussing something about tech with me, so other people that would overhear our convo won’t step in… that’s the second reason I thought he was dodgy , some parts of our convo I don’t reli rmb, not sure if this was a hypno thing or it was my bad memory, then he went on to ask my favourite flower I said rose which is not ! But I don’t know why I said Rose, watched some YouTube video someone posted here it says 9out of 10 people would say rose , choose a number from 1-5 I picked 3 and my favourite colour blue , and asked for my moms name, it was Maria , and when he wrote it down he misspelt it to Marie and I corrected him and said it was with an A, then he added the A after the E, and when I opened that crumple ball of paper he asked me to hold still before asking my moms name, of course….it had all the right answers in it, but the weird thing was my moms name was written “marie a”, if he was really a claravoiyant why did he not just write “Maria” and had to write the E misspelling as well? Anyway I felt scared the same time impressed so I wanted to listen what he wanted to say to me, I’m like “luck, what luck, tell me !” But then when he asked me to give him his hand and told me to look him in the eye while he reads me while looking at my forehead, but I have had experiences where I book a palm reading and tarot card reading , or fortune telling, in Hong Kong it’s quite common to make these bookings and get readings , so I realised this must cost me a fortune! Then I told him I don’t want to be disrespectful to him , but if he is going to perform a reading I would only be able give him $100hkd (15usd ) then he bargained and protested at least $500hkd and that got me a bit pissed off, if I wanted a reading I would make my own booking, then I walked away and he followed me, and kept bargaining showing me the photos , I didn’t get to see them clearly , and then I offered how about I pay you by a gift, I’ll buy you a present and mail it to you cause if I only pay u $100for a reading I’ll feel bad cause $100hkd is too little for a fortune telling , but I don’t have the money….anyway long story short , I took 100hkd from my wallet turned around and left him , never looked back, thought he might follow me or sth so I was freaked out for half an hour, I even asked if I could take the little paper with me …and after leaving him I took the paper out still believing what he said about the bloke who’s gona steal my idea, now that I read all these comments, it’s a recurring theme I’m not going to take it so seriously, but the fact that i experience this con today made me question my energy, I always am proud of my good energy, I know like attracts like ….so good souls only receive the good energy…so am a bit disappointed to find out I ran into a scam….to whoever is feeling disappointed in experiencing this , just believe that all things happen for a divine reason, and no point warning other ppl here cause Iv never heard of this scam before today, only when you experience it you will google it, so what I can offer is , get a good sleep…and tomorrow will be shinier! And it happened for the best reasons ! Don’t forget that !

  31. I am from Australia and in Hong Kong for a Trade Show..an Indian man came up to me and did exactly the same as mentioned here. He told me poor people give him $1000hkd medium $2k and rich $3k..give him money and he will tell me more. I swear though that bit of paper never left my hand…so l am stumped. I have his business card if anyone is interested!…l told my husband and he sent me this link.. still no real explanation how its done…dont know if l feel duped or amazed. I am supposed to meet him tomorrow for more!

  32. To “The lucky face club”. This also happened to me in Melbourne at the DFO car park in Essendon. An Indian man approached me and went through all the same hoo ha. Even though I got caught in his spin, I still felt like I was going to get pickpocketed or mugged. I did not give the man any money and I just walked away. But I can’t help still feeling that this man intruded in my space and life without proper permission . His quick talking caught me by surprise and I’m really upset by it. Next time I see him or someone else doing it, I’ will be reporting it to the police or centre management at least! Or maybe, I just mess with their minds instead 🙂

  33. well well well… today Toronto Canada out front of Rogers by Yonge and Dundas this afternoon around 4:30pm I was standing there waiting for my buddy to go for a break and was approached by an Indian man , well dressed etc same deal but not as detailed just the colour and a number he asked, so he wrote this on a small yellow piece of paper crumpled it up gave it to me before any thing happened. Then when it came down to reveal it I saw a crumpled piece of paper fall on the ground I said hey man you dropped your paper and he played it off, he basically pretended he was writing down other info but he actually wrote down what I said “Green and #2” after he (gave me the paper at the start) I wasn’t aware of it in the moment and he asked for money say please place bills. then I was telling him listen I aint got bills he insist come on man i know you can give me bills I gave him 2 toonies for his trouble told him straight up I’m broke, he accepted the $4 and walked away. I was dumbfounded, then 5 minutes later I realize he switched the crumpled paper with the correct response on it and I’m not even mad, can’t knock the hustle. But I knew it was some bullshit no prayer spirit shit lol

  34. This happened in Croydon today. Same spheel you have lucky face, choose a number between 1 and 5, choose a flower, two men are in love with you, one for your physical aspects and one for your mind. blah blah blah.

Then proceeded to tell me a woman has put a curse on me

Handed me a card with the name Dev Swami

  35. Toronto Eaton Center, Canada. Well-dressed calm Indian man walked by and told me I have a light on my face and I am a very lucky man. Then I was distracted by a call, I thanked him while talking over the phone. “Your next month will be very lucky” – he said again. I thanked again and continued talking over the phone. He disappeared in a crowd of shoppers.

  36. He’s back in the City of London – favourite colours, numbers, small piece of paper, lucky face etc etc – and please can I have £10 for blind children…
    Nice smiley man though

  37. Same thing happened with me today in Bangalore, India. Two sardar guys came and one of them asked money for gurudwara. He then started telling me about the lucky forehead and my family and then wrote three amounts Rs 3100, 5100, 7100. He showed a lot of tricks and told how they were linked to me and my family. I was amazed by his tricks and ended up giving him around 300Euros.

I was such a fool to give away my hard earned money like this.

  38. The same situation in Zürich a few days ago. but how can we find out how this trick works?

  39. This happened to me, yesterday in Paris.
“Lucky face”. Young Indian smartly dressed…
In my case, I picked a three digit number and a color: 214 black… It was stunning to pull the crumpled paper out of my pocket, unfold it and read “214 black”…. Which goes to say that this much more complicated than the usual “3 Rose”.
It may be a scam, but the guy is quite talented and probably a real medium. I did agree to pay him a fee, but do not regret it. If anything, because of the entertainment he provided.

  40. Another Torontonian Avatar
    Another Torontonian

Yonge and Dundas (Toronto, Canada) behind Atrium on Bay. Indian man wearing sport jacket with a big polo logo on the chest. Told me I had a lucky face, same paper trick, but asked for my first girlfriends name. Presumably to write it down and switch it and impress me later. I refused to tell him and tried to unfold the tiny paper ball, but he kept telling me to stop, finally I got tired to his charades and left, and he asked for his tiny paper ball back too haha. Feeling weirded out I googled and found this “lucky face” scam, scrolled all the way down and saw two other recent posts about an Indian man in downtown Toronto (even at the same intersection!), now I can confirm this was probably the same guy and is indeed a scam. The power of the internet am I right?

  41. This happened to me in Long Island, New York. I was approached by an Indian man who said “You are a very lucky lady”. He gave me a piece of paper that was folded up, told me not to open it and he proceeded to ask me questions. I told me the answers as he was writing them down. Then he told me to open the paper and compare the answers which were the same. He then asked for money which I foolishly gave him. He gave me a “lucky stone” and claimed to be a holy man. Never again. After reading all of these similar stories I know that I am not the only victim of this terrible scam. BELIEVE IN AND HAVE TRUST IN GOD! NOT SORCERY! BEWARE OF ANY PERSON WHO APPROACHES YOU AND TELLS YOU THAT “YOU ARE VERY LUCKY” OR “DO YOU WANT YOUR FORTUNE TOLD?” SICK!!

  42. I saw him yesterday in Teddington and did exactly as above and asked me to give him £50-£100 so I gave him £10 and he said you’re making fun of this. People give £50-£100 just like that so I felt bad and gave another £10 but he wasn’t happy and tried his best to get more money out of me but this time I controlled my emotion and told him that I will give you money next month as I am.already struggling and left. If he is honestly taking money for good causes I have no problem but if it’s just a con then he should be careful as what goes around, comes around. However ad somebody mentioned, if u r giving small amount just for entertainment then it’s OK. But he shouldn’t force anyone to get money. I hope you all have recovered from this now and learnt lesson from it, like I have. God bless you all. Take care and be safe!!

  43. Ha… The same thing just happens to me just now in East London, a friendly Sikh who told me about my good karma and I’ll make fortune in 2017, asked about my brother, favourite colour, etc., although I remain sceptical through out but towards the end I gave him £10 and put it in his small pocket. I lost £10 and gain some experience.

  44. Was at Raffles Place when this indian man approached me and said that i have a lucky face.. He said many things about me that were true and said that the next 3 months will be my golden month and i had to pray to god in the morning for 5 minutes everyday.. i’m in awe as to how he read my personality and stuff.. the paper thing was probably some magic trick skill.. all in all it was pretty amazing and eye opening but it’s probably a scam.. He asked for a small donation for kids in India and i gave him $2 cause i aint financially strong.. Opinions ?

  45. Jermyn St. Mayfair, London. Pleasant, engaging, non-threatening Indian man approaches me. “You spend too much time thinking” etc. Pretty obvious. I was distracted because I was looking for a gallery. Bits of paper, numbers, flower, brothers, sisters, age etc. All there. All correct. A big switcheroo going on somewhere. He dropped one of the bits of paper on the ground. He made no move to pick it up, so I did. All part of the game.
“A friend is jealous of you.” He could have used any number of universal truths on me. His game is probably hundreds of years old. I gave him £2 for entertaining me when he asked for money, despite his suggestion that I should accompany him to a cashpoint for more.

  46. I am a Fiji Indian and was on a very short visit to Sydney recently. Its a huge shame that another Indian wearing a blue suit and turban conned me of $100 using the same trick. He started off by telling me that I was a lucky man and had good fortunes ahead of me. He also repeated the same tricks using numbers, flowers, fruit and paper. Makes me wonder how such persons gain entry into Australia. ..

  47. Can some please help me track this guy. If you meet him take his number to arrange an appointment for later. I saw him few weeks back healing one of our friend who has psychological problems and he had told her that she is possessed by evil spirit. She believes his tricks and won’t tell us his details. We just want to ward off this evil guy. Please take his contact number if you happen to see him again near Oxford street in London

  48. I HAVE A STORY TO SHARE ! THANKS TO ALL WHO POSTED AND SHARED THEIR STORY! MY STORY IS A VERY SURREAL! 2007 February a YOGI came into my office In Los Angeles ! HE KNEW MY PAST! Details that NOBODY KNEW! He gave me a paper IN MY LEFT HAND and said what is your favorite animal ? I said JAGUAR HE SAID OPEN IT ! On the paper he had written JAGUAR . He took the second letter A AND SAID YOUR MOTHERS NAME IS AZAR! Which it is ! HE PROCEEDED TO TELL ME WHEN I would pass away and what I must do and how he will find me again . The details he knew were ALL CORRECT !! He gave me an orange necklace and said when this massive wealth comes he WILL FIND ME AGAIN AND I PROMIse to give 1 percent of that wealth . 4 years later in 2011 a stranger in Beverly Hills told me hey YOU SCORPIO ! That man that came to see you he gave you something it’s orange no? RANDOM! But I assure you NOT ALL CASES OF YOGI ENCOUNTERS ARE SCAM !!!!!some have a CHANNEL TO GOD! MY HUMBLE OPINION

  49. 25 July 2017. Wolverhampton, England – town centre.

Indian gentleman with a black leather folder dressed in a white button down shirt and black trousers, probably in his early to mid sixties.

He stopped me as I was walking along with “You’ve got a lucky face” and it’s the same as the rest of you; he asked me to choose a colour, a number under ten, and a flower. My choices were grey, 8, and orchid. These were present on the little scrap of paper he’d poked into my left palm, and he said he could tell me something of my future if I had the time. I said sure.

He said some things about my life that were accurate, and did another little paper thing with the number of siblings I have, my husband’s first initial, and my age. These were correct too.

Reopening the black folder, he pulled out a reel of black cotton and unwound a length. He moved this around in front of his forehead, chin, cheeks, and chest and then asked me to break it into seven pieces. I did, and scrunched them up, muttered, and told me to hold the ball of threads to the base of my spine for a moment before placing it back on the table. I complied, and he picked it up, mumbled again, and it appeared as whole. He explained that this was going to help one of the issues he’d identified in my life, and while I’m sure it was sleight of hand I can’t help but hope it does.

After this he got out a new piece of paper and pointed to three figures, telling me that they were the tiers usually paid by people of varying statuses. He showed me a photo of a large group of children sitting on a mattress and asked me to put some money in his folder to help his temple. He pointed to the top figure and said that he would pray for me. I said that I didn’t have much money on me but I’d be happy to give him something for the interesting experience and put £10 in the folder. He offered to walk me over to the cash point and I declined, then he gave me a small decorated red ceramic bead and told me it’s a lucky stone. He wrote me his mobile number written on another scrap of paper “in case I want additional horoscopes or to donate money to his temple” and I asked what the name of his temple is. “The Temple Of India” he replied and asked if he could have a hug. I obliged and left feeling bizarre.

Google found nothing on his Temple Of India round here, of course, and brought me here to you guys.

Interesting experience, and worth £10 I think!

  50. Guess what….I had the same thing. Indian guy approached me in East London, I was walking from Aldgate to Shoreditch. He was dressed dapper in a smart “Sherlock Holmes” looking suit. He told me I had a very lucky face and maintained eye contact. Gave me a piece of paper which I had to hold in my left hand and that if what he said corresponds to what I had in my hand I will be very lucky in August and September, he asked what was most important to me, I said happiness.
He then asked me to tell him what number/colour I could think of (all colours but not black – apparently unlucky & any number between 1-10)
Sure enough he got it right blue/4. Then showed me pictures of some form of Indian deity and asked me for money, I explained I had none, he asked for change, I said no, he looked disappointed.
Weird experiment, defo a global scam but I’m intrigued how he does the number thing…?
