There is a short sidebar visible on the front page of MetaFilter. This sidebar contains recent news, links and other information of interest to MetaFilter users, and it can only be updated by Matt Haughey. Examples of sidebar items might include notices of upcoming Meetups or links to very popular news stories that Matt Haughey doesn't want to see posted on the front page every day.
