You can become a new member at MetaFilter by registering. You have to pay a $5 fee to Matt Haughey to cover the cost of server upgrades.

[edit] Why should you register?

When you register, you become a member of MetaFilter. Members have the ability to post links and comment in threads. Membership also gives you a few other advantages including the ability to see how many links and comments have been added since your last visit, the ability to customize MeFi, and your own profile page. You also remove the BlogAds on the right hand side of the window, but not the smaller ads in the upper right hand corner, nor the Google ads on individual comment pages.

There exist other communities similar in some way to MeFi; some are indicated in Similar Websites and Related Websites.
