Had a great great time!!! Thanks to all the folks that took me around and metup! : >

[Old Metatalk thread] [New Metatalk thread]

ok: let's make plans! : >

Coventry, Kenilworth, Stratford-upon-Avon & Warwick

This is more the tourist thing - castles, cathederals, Shakespeare & cute countryside. However a booking is made for 6.30pm at Shimla Spice in the railway station square.

Manchester

London

ALSO: i'm going to do the Brick Lane Festival on the 12th, and then that night, a <nowiki>Battleship Potemkin/Pet? Shop Boys screening/performance thing</nowiki> in Trafalgar Sq...email me if you want to meet for that.

Hey all, I may be unable to make the 14 cuz of work - boo :( - although I will be there on the 15th. But I think amberglow's leaving then? plep may be there on the 15th as well, though - carter.

Oxford

amberglow would like to see one of our fine museums, so that's a cert. Lunch and / or drinks Options:
 - The Eagle & Child? (St. Giles, Tolkien & CS Lewis's old place)
 - The Royal Oak? (Woodstock Road, decent food I think)
 - The Bookbinders? (OK pub nr. St Barnabas Church in Jericho.)
 - The Harcourt Arms? (basic beer and fags pub)
or
 - G & D's Ice Cream Cafe (made on the premises, also bagels /pizza)
 - Browns Restaurant (maybe for afternoon tea?!!?)
 - Somewhere in Gloucester Green?
 - Pizza Express?
 - All Bar One? (great wine list + imported beers + food)
 - MOMA has a good cafe! 2 birds, 1 stone? (Popped in today - sadly closed on Mondays)

We could do several of these things - like lunch at ?(not MOMA - see above), drop in to the Pitt-Rivers or Ashmolean Museums, or the Bodleian Divinity School, for a tour, then choose a nice pub to have a beer in.

Decisions, decisions!!

cool davehat! i'm booked for oxford with dash on monday i think : > and want to do Brighton for another day, but would love to do manchester, at least a taste of it. I'll email you about it (3 hrs is not bad, and i've never seen the countryside really anyway...)....We'll mention it on the MeTa thread i'm going to start next week....

I'm going to be the meetup-ing-est person on earth : >

here's what was here before:

cool! I'm available for whatever, whenever, and don't anyone feel obligated to entertain me (altho it would be fun to be out of London with someone i know.) I'm there from the 8th til the 15th. : >

I have no expectation that this will be useful, I am simply chuffed that this is doable! Doubt that I'll be able to make Manchester on the 13th, but I'll see Amberglow and any one else in Oxford for the 11th [either for a mini pissup or for cultural purposes].- dash_slot- [Spot the deliberate error...]

Amberglow, I'd gladly show you round Manchester and would really love it if it inspired a UK meet-up here. Not sure its feasible though. Manchester always seems to be a step too far for those unfamiliar with it.

As for getting here, I took the new Virgin train London - Manchester - London today (Friday 27th) and they've finally managed to get the journey down to 2hrs 45 mins again. It would be quicker but for the toilets failing at high speed (I shit you not!). Off peak travel is about £55.00. As far as flights go, it's BA or BMI. They have cheap seats available for advance bookings. It'd be about £75 if you buy more than 7 days in advance. The flight's about 45 minutes. With sundry airport time and travel to/from the airport either end, it'll take about 2 hrs.

Once here, its about a third cheaper than London.

If Manchester is too far, I'd say go to Oxford. Its my home city and I love it. Go see the Pitt-Rivers museum. Proper cultural pillage, displayed the Victorian way! Also, grab a G+D's Ice Cream. First job I ever had was scooping that stuff.

Hope this helps with some ideas - davehat [at] gmail
